Would like to move to Holland/Amsterdam – Advice on finding work and renting?
by admin on Jan.17, 2010, under Netherlands
After a trip to Amsterdam a month ago i’ve been fixated on the idea of moving over there. Is there anyway I can just packup and go with my girlfriend? Everywhere I look for apartments they are looking at 2000 euro per month, even in Jordaan and Haarlem the rent is not that much cheaper.
Any advice on housing would be appreciated.
Secondly finding work is another problem… personally I have a background in IT and have found many specialist IT positions yet most require specialist experience or qualifications. I have college (UK BTEC) qualifications at the highest possible level before University and have a varied knowledge of all things IT and currently run an online store and offer local support. However any jobs I have heard back from won’t consider an application till I have a Dutch Social Security number. Not that I want to be stuck in IT, i’d happily work in a bar/restaurant/coffeeshop or anywhere else in the city. Data entry would even get me by as the City is so wonderful. Is it easy to get a job?
If I were to just packup, go and register with local police authorities in Amsterdam to say I now live there would I be able to claim Benefits to help me get by? And as for accomodation how would this work?
Believe me I don’t want to stay on benefits and i’m a hardworking individual. I just need to get out of England
.
Kind regards and hopefully someone can help!

moving to amsterdam. please help?
by admin on Nov.20, 2009, under Netherlands
im a junior in high school and i will be moving to amsterdam with a few close friends after i graduate. i need to know if there is any paperwork to do before i leave or if i can fly there and then work things out. were doing fairly well on money. one friend has about $60,000 and i have $200 but im getting really serious about raising money now. im unemployed currently but working on that. where could we live close to the red light district? how much is a house, apartments wont work as we need to grow. will $13,000 be enough to keep me afloat untill i get a job their? who would hire me? thanks for the help.
from your condesending tone i gather that you make assumtions of american children. i speak basic dutch, am in a graphic imaging program at a local college for half the day, and i am completely aware of the housing shortage in that area as well as the hugely inflated prices. i consider myself intellegent and compared to many of my peers i am not an ignorant product of the american school system, the us may seem nice to you but if you could see the stupidity that will be our future goverment you would reconsider. it was not my intent to just meander in to the netherlands and blow all my money untill i found that i could not support myself and return tail between the legs to the states to hold an office job for the rest of my life. it is not a “dream” like you say it is a reality, we have put many hours of work into planning a move out of this terrible country and its between ampsterdam and british columbia. we have put 5 times the work into planning bc. thank you for your input but–
yahoo answers was not my main hope for information, i just hoped that someone might give me a little advice from personal experience. thanks for the websites. just to clarify the decision was made 3 years ago and we are very serious and informed on this topic. so please pardon my additude.

I am planning a trip to amsterdam, please read the details and help w/ questions?
by admin on Jul.07, 2009, under Netherlands
I am currently planning a trip to amsterdam, I am wondering what is the best option for 4 people to be in amsterdam for 1.5 weeks. I am curious weather renting a house or apartment for the time would be the best solution. Or would staying in a hotel be cheaper? What are the best shops to hit and attractions to see. Im clueless about this place. Please only serious answers from people who either live there or have visited there. I would really love to talk to someone in depth about it and what are the best steps to take to have fun but also not spend a HUGE amount of money.
10 points for the best advice

Question about renting an apartment in Netherlands?
by admin on Jun.16, 2009, under Netherlands
Soon I will rent an apartment in Amsterdam. The landlord is currently in the UK. I will get a contract signed by him and hes lawyer. After payment , I will receive the keys. I cannot send money to hes account, as he says it is overdrawn, so he wants the money sent into a cousins account.
What I want to know is, does this seem weird to anybody. Will the contract stand incase of any problem and why is it bad to receive money into an overdrawn account. and what can I do to protect the contract legally here ?
Thanks alot !

How can I convince my parents to let me stay in Amsterdam with relatives?
by admin on Jun.12, 2009, under Netherlands
My family and I are going on a huge vacation this summer to Europe; probably the biggest vacation I’ll ever get to take. We’re staying for a total of 3 weeks: 1 in Holland and Belgium, 1 in France, and 1 in Italy.
But what I really want is to stay with my aunt and uncle in Amsterdam after the vacation is over, instead of coming back to Seattle where I live. This is undoubtedly problematic as I speak very little dutch, am 16 years old, not to mention my parents would definitely not be into it.
School wouldn’t be a problem, as I already have my GED and am taking a few years off before I start college. I think Amsterdam would be amazing to live in, and my aunt and uncle have a spare apartment in their building that they own, that I could pay rent for. I’ve thought about it a lot, and really, really want to do it, but have no idea how to talk to my parents about it.
How should I approach them? Would they go for it if I had a convincing enough argument? Am I crazy for even wanting to do this?

I want to visit Amsterdam, Netherlands?
by admin on Feb.06, 2009, under Netherlands
I plan on going this Spring so I’m starting to save now… I plan to stay a week and wanted to know if anyone has recomendations on where to stay that isn’t so pricey? I found this site lovingamsterdam.com that has apartments. I’m thinking that’s my best shot. Any advice? Also do all Europeans hate Americans like I hear? I want to party and have fun while I’m there.
I plan on going with 1 or 2 of my closest friends and the reason I ask about European’s not liking Americans is because well I’m ashamed of my country’s view on certain things, I don’t like where our “leader” leading us, and I know how hostile other countries can be towards Americans. I just want to vacation somewhere that is scenic and laid back so that I can have fun. Sight-seeing is a must for me.
